Legionella is bacterium naturally in freshwater.  In its natural state, it is not harmful.  Legionella only becomes a concern when the bacterium grows and spreads and then is inhaled by humans.   


Legionella grows best in large, complex water systems.  People who become infected with Legionella might be diagnosed with one of two illnesses:  Legionnaires' Disease or Pontiac Fever.

Legionnaires’ disease is similar to pneumonia.  Symptoms include cough, shortness of breath, fever, muscle aches, and/ or headache.


Pontiac fever is milder and does not include pneumonia,  Symptoms are primarily fever and muscle aches.
